"September's Harvest"

One of my fondest memories were outings with my family. One of those favorite outings, was the the annual fall goose hunt. These were moments spent together as a family, it was a time of learning, sharing and laughter. These are now experiences that I cherish and share with my own sons.

An important lesson that we teach our children, is to have respect for the land and only harvest what is needed; so they, and their children can also enjoy these special times which are a part of our culture and heritage.

"Northern Reflection"

The Arctic is unlike a desert. It receives 2-5 inches of moisture during a year; nonetheless, the polar bear is at home in this frozen world.

The hollow hairs of their coats transmits heat to their black skin underneath, and the blubber surrounding their body acts like insulation against the severest cold.

Like all bear cubs, polar bear cubs are playful and curious. This cub has noticed his reflection off the ice surface for the first time.

"The Companion"

When winter arrives in the north, my family spends a great deal of time outdoors. We enjoy the winter weather by skidooing, hiking and snowshoeing. During outings, we are often joined by Gray Jays, or "Whiskeyjacks" as they are called locally.

These "companions" are always willing to accept food from our children and entertain us with their antics.

"The Loon Family"

Loon Chicks spend are very short time in the nest. In just a few hours, they are capable of swimming and within two days of hatching, are eating live minnows.

Loons are extremely protective and caring toward their young. In the first few days of life, chicks are kept very near the parents, often riding "piggyback".

This loon family is setting out on a fishing expedition before night sets in.

"James Bay Lowlands"

The James Bay Area is home to a number of migratory waterfowl. These geese have returned to nest and breed along the Bay. The spring thaw and bright blue skies welcome the birds to rich golden grass and patches of snow as far as the eye can see.

The first sign of geese may be their call, which carries for long distances across the flat terrain of the James Bay Lowlands.
